One of the most important aspects of cataract surgery is post-operative care and recovery.

Post-op care constitutes the following:

  • Surgical site care

  • Pain management

  • Prevention of post-op complications

  • Return to normalcy

Let’s look at them one at a time:

  1. Surgical site care

    1. Immediately after the surgery, a dressing is applied to the eye which has undergone surgery.

    2. The doctor [ophthalmic surgeon] may advise you to wear a protective eye shield for a day or two after the surgery.

    3. He may also recommend the use of certain eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation.

  2. Pain management

    1. The doctor would also prescribe painkillers to alleviate any pain or discomfort in the operated eye.

    2. Pain, irritation and/or discomfort may remain for a couple of days after surgery but usually disappear within a week.

  3. Prevention of post-op complications

    1. Your doctor will ask you for the first follow-up within a day or two of the surgery.

    2. The subsequent follow-ups are within a week of the first and then after a month to monitor the healing. This may vary depending on individual needs and the doctor’s discretion.

  4. Return to normalcy

    1. During the post-op period, the doctor advises you against heavy activities or working in a smoky environment.

    2. You may also be asked to use shades/goggles as a protective measure.

    3. It’s normal to perceive brighter colours after the surgery since one is using a new lens.

    4. Complete recovery usually takes 8 weeks. However, in certain cases with comorbid conditions [the presence of diabetes or other diseases], it may take longer.

    5. Most people need glasses after surgery. This is usually between 1 to 3 months of the surgery.

When to contact the doctor after surgery?

You must lose no time in consulting your doctor should you encounter the following symptoms:

  • Loss of vision

  • Persisting pain despite the use of pain-killers even after a week of surgery

  • Increasing redness of the eye

  • Swelling of the eye

  • Flashes and floaters in the vision

It’s always better to consult your doctor for a detailed discussion about your specific ailment.
