No You Don't.

Thyroid is a located in front of the neck which is involved in secretion of a hormone called thyroxine. This gland can develop more than 100 types of diseases. Some of these diseases require the gland to be removed by surgery. As you can imagine, a surgery over neck would leave scar in front of neck for life. Of late, surgery for the thyroid gland is undergoing a significant advancement.

The most up-to-date approach for performing such operations is a procedure that is easier to undergo and recover from than traditional thyroid gland surgery, as effective as conventional surgery, and most importantly, leaves no scar on the patient's neck.

The neck is a cosmetically sensitive area and any scar can look prominent in the neck.  Conventional open surgery leaves an undesirable scar on the neck. The more technically advanced laparoscopic & robotic thyroid surgery avoids incisions in the neck, thus preserving the normal appearance. This technique is called scar-less endoscopic thyroidectomy.

Though surgical specialists have been using this procedure - since the early 1990s, with good success.  To date, though, only a few centres have committed to the training and equipment required for performing this advanced procedure. Making the care determinations described above and offering the right, best, and most advanced treatment for thyroid disorders, requires a specialty group with significant experience and training, and a dedicated focus on thyroid care.

Thyroid surgery is needed for many conditions. Commonly this surgery is done for multi nodular goitres (MNG), solitary nodule of thyroid (SNT), follicular adenomas and papillary carcinomas. Most of the conditions that require thyroid surgery can be tackled by this advanced surgery.

The recovery from scar-less thyroid surgery is similar to traditional surgical methods. Most people go home the day after surgery, and can return to work after two to three weeks.
