Pregnancy is one of the most vital part of life. It plays a special bond between mother and baby.It has its influence on nearly every aspect of health including oral health. Pregnancy and accompanying hormonal changes affect oral health of woman and later the child's oral health too.

How does your oral health in pregnancy affect baby's teeth later?

  • Untreated cavities of the woman have bacteria leading to transmission of them in child and hence more cavities in the teeth of the child.
  • Kissing,sharing utensils between mother and child will lead to bacteria passage from mother to child.
  • Gum related problems not treated before pregnancy may lead to premature baby birth(before 37 weeks) or low birth weight of the baby.

How to take care of your oral health during pregnancy?

  • Cavities if known should be treated before pregnancy.
  • Dental check-up should be done in every 6 months.
  • Brushing twice a day with flossing each day reduces chances of cavities and keeps gums healthy.
  • Chewing gums containing Xylitol reduces bacteria accumulation in teeth.
  • In case of morning sickness, rinse mouth with mixture of baking soda and water and rinse again  to avoid increase of acid levels during vomiting.
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid dry mouth or use sugarless candy or gum.
  • X- rays and nitrous oxide anaesthesia should be avoided.
  • Usage of medicines for safety should be done after approval by obstetrician.
