Ekta (name changed) a middle aged housewife was admitted in ICU as she suffered from sudden onset of restlessness, apprehension, pounding heart beats, disturbed sleep, agitation,dull aching headache and aches all over body. She was stabilised with medications and her symptoms subsided. On enquiry, she also expressed thoughts of ending her life. On probing more into her life, Ekta said she was suffering from above symptoms since 9 months but never discussed about it with dear ones. After sudden death of her husband in a road accident a year ago, Ekta was left alone with the responsibility of her family. She was suffering from Depression since 8-9 months with symptoms like sadness of mood, lack of interest and concentration in work, lack of sleep, persistent irritability. 

Depression and anxiety are common psychological disorder with increasing prevalence worldwide. Over last 25 years the prevalence of depression and anxiety has increased by 50%. Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji also highlighted the depression issue in the ‘Mann ki Baat’ on 26 March 2017. As per a study by World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2015, over 5 crore Indians are suffered from depressive disorders. A study led by WHO shows that lack of treatment of depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy more than US$ 1 trillion each year. 

Depression can affect anyone irrespective of religion, sex, economic status etc. and is characterized by persistent low mood, lack of concentration and interest in work, increased or decreased sleep and appetite, irritability, suicidal ideations. 1 suicide occurs every 40 second in the world. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent severe complication of depression like suicide. Unemployment, poverty, chronic medical illness, relationship problems etc. are factors contributing to stress and depression. Chronic stress and poor coping strategies can lead neurotransmitter deficits (Serotonin, Nor epinephrine) leading to depressive mental state. 

Depression is preventable and can be treated with combination of anti-depressant medications and counselling. Adequate duration of treatment can save lots of life and morbidity associated with depression.

Often, people deny suffering from depression but never seek help leading to mental anguish.
