What is bleaching?

Bleaching is the restoration of normal colour to a tooth by decolorizing the stain with a powerful oxidizing agent known as bleaching agent.

2.  Home bleaching

 1.  In office bleaching: There are 2 methods which depends on the vitality of tooth.

  • For Non-vital(root canal treated) tooth:

 - The root canal is re-opened, a bleaching solution is placed inside the canal, resealed with a  temporary filling.

- The bleaching agent is removed after achieving the desired tooth shade.

  •   For Vital Teeth :

- The teeth are isolated, as it protects the gums from discomfort and irritation.

-  The outer surface of the teeth is coated with a chemical solution and exposed to a special light for 20 to 30 mins.

2.  Home bleaching:

- Custom fit tray is used with 10% carbamide peroxide.

-  Place one drop of bleaching gel per tooth in a plastic tray.

-  The tray should be placed over your teeth and should be worn for a time period of 2-4 hrs every      session or as per your dentist’s recommendation.

What you should know about home bleaching?

-  Avoid consuming citrus fruits and juices, soft drinks and antacids. These products contain substances that when combined with the bleaching agent can slow down the tooth whitening process and cause mild irritation to the tissues in your mouth.

-  If you have decay, be sure to treat your teeth prior to bleaching.

-  Results can be seen as early as 2-14 days or as long as 6-12 months.

- Do not use any home bleaching product if you are pregnant or nursing a baby.

-  Do not drink or smoke during the treatment.

-  Home bleaching can have adverse side effects, including tooth sensitivity, a burning sensation in the gums, soft tissue sores or ulcers, or a sore throat from swallowing the bleach.

Note: In office bleaching is often the most effective way of lightening your teeth because the agents are stronger and the procedure is more controlled.
