It is impossible to avoid dental problems even after doing regular brushing and go for a regular dental check-up.

Accidents can happen anytime anywhere. I am discussing here some dental emergency conditions and steps to manage them.

TOOTHACHE:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water and remove any food that is lodged in between teeth with dental floss.
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of your mouth, especially if there's swelling.
  • Do not apply aspirin directly to the painful area.
  • Visit your dentist if pain persists

BROKEN TOOTH:

  • Rinse your mouth, taking care to save any broken piece of tooth.
  • Use gauze for about 10 minutes to stop bleeding.
  • Apply cold compress around the affected area to minimize pain and swelling.
  • Visit your dentist immediately.

KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH:

  • Hold the tooth by the crown (not from root portion) and rinse with water to remove any dirt.
  • Take care not to remove any tissue attached to the tooth (do not scrub).
  • Reinsert the tooth in the socket if you can, but don't force it. you can keep the tooth in a cup with milk.
  • Chances of saving the tooth are highest if you see your dentist within one hour.

LOSS OF RESTORATION:

- Filling

  • Use sugar-free gum or dental cement as a temporary fix.
  • Visit your dentist as early as possible.

- Crown

  • Try to put the crown back in place using toothpaste to hold it there (if you can).
  • Save the crown and bring it with you to your dentist.

ABSCESS:

  • If you notice small, painful, pimple like bump on your gums, it could be an abscess.
  • Can be a sign of an infection that may spread if left untreated.
  • Rinse with warm salt water to help reduce pain.
  • Don't apply hot compress from outside of your mouth.
  • Visit your dentist as soon as possible.

ULCER DUE TO BRACES:

  • Apply sugar-free gum on the culprit brace.
  • Apply  analgesic gum gel to the affected area.
  • Visit your dentist if the problem persists.
