Winter can be a difficult time for your skin. The harsh cold air robs the natural moisture from your skin, leaving it dry and itchy.

It can cause severe dry skin, eczema (itchy and swollen patches of skin), and psoriasis (a skin condition having red, itchy and scaly patches).

Here are a few essential tips that can help your skin stay moisturized and look good all season long.

1) Avoid hot showers. It is very tempting to have a hot water bath, especially in winter. Instead use lukewarm water as hot water removes the moisture from your skin, making it dry.

Apply a gentle moisturizer immediately after your bath because moisturizers seal best on damp skin.

2) Stay hydrated. It is important to stay hydrated during winters as cold air can make your skin dry. The best way to keep your skin hydrated is to take a steam.

Face steaming is done to open the pores and let your skin breathe. It also increases blood circulation which reduces pimples and unclogs your pores.

3) Use skin care products wisely. The key to making your skin glowing and healthy in winters is by using skin care products wisely.

Replace your artificial skin care products with natural products such as aloe vera gel, homemade butter, milk, almond oil, etc.

A combination of aloe vera and almond oil makes an excellent moisturiser that softens your skin, imparts glow, reduces dark circles and blemishes.

Avoid masks and peels, astringent lotions or any other skin care products which contain alcohol as it can make your skin dry.

4) Protect your skin. The UV rays can damage your skin to a great extent, even in winters.

Wear gloves, goggles, and a cap to protect your skin from the dry cold wind. Apply sunscreen lotion while going out.

You can make use of coconut oil or Vitamin E which acts as the best natural sunscreen for healthy skin, especially in winters.

5) Do not over-exfoliate your skin. Exfoliating your skin once a week removes your dead skin cells and promotes the growth of new skin cells. However, too much exfoliation can harm your skin and make your skin dry.

The drier your skin is, the more sebum (oil) it produces. This leads to increased clogging of hair follicles on your skin, resulting in acne breakouts.

If you still experience dryness, discomfort, and irritation after trying these healthy skin tips, consult your doctor. You may need a medicated moisturizer to overcome your skin conditions.

Have a happy and healthy winter!
