Believe it or not, one of the best ways you can achieve success is to forget the D word—diet, that is. Many people are done in by their “diets.”  They are overzealous, restrict too much, including their favorite foods, and suddenly begin cheating and maybe binging , and soon they are off the diet. Many even gain weight. Instead, stick to a healthy plan as suggested in this that realistically restricts energy by no more than 500 or 1,000 calories per day. This promotes a slow weight loss and allows you to incorporate some of your favorite foods. If you crave ice cream, have a small dish. In the big picture, you are trying to improve your eating habits over the long term, which includes learning to make better choices more often and overeat less often—if ever.

Don’t Look for Magic

Every week something new is thought to aid in weight loss or help you achieve a healthy body weight. Although some of these aids are harmless foods or products you may already be using, others have the potential to be costly or dangerous, even if they are natural. Take oolong tea, green tea, coffee, or hop extract for example. A recent study found that supplementing the diet of rodents with isomerized hop extract (containing isohumulones)—normally found in pale ales and other styles of beer—prevented weight gain in rodents. Inhumans, a study conducted in the Netherlands found that people who consumed large amounts of caffeine (more than 300 mg) had greater success at reducing body weight, fat mass, and waist circumference (as well as maintaining resting energy expenditure) than did those who consumed little or no caffeine. Certainly, if you already enjoy a glass of hoppy beer or cup of tea or coffee, relax and know.
