Immunization against Tetanus is an effective way to prevent a very serious disease.

In this article, I will try to explain in detail the immunization against Tetanus.

What is Tetanus?

Tetanus is an infection caused by bacteria called Clostridium tetani. Tetanus bacteria are everywhere in the environment, including soil, dust, and manure.

It is a serious bacterial infection that causes painful muscle spasms and can lead to death. Tetanus is a potentially fatal bacterial infection that affects the nerves.

A vaccine can easily prevent the infection, which has no cure.

Which age group needs Tetanus immunization routinely ?

- Infants and children

- Adolescents

- Adults

-Pregnancy

- Geriatric population

Yes, Everyone needs to be immunized against Tetanus disease.

How to get immunized against Tetanus?

Tetanus vaccine is available in various combinations. It can be taken alone or in combination.

How is the vaccine administered?

It is taken intramuscularly.

How many doses are required?

For complete protection: Total 5 doses are required

  • 3 doses 1 month apart
  • 1 booster after 1 year
  • 2nd booster after 5-10 years

Thereafter only a single booster every 10 years.

Duration of protection?

- 2 doses taken at 1-month interval gives protection for 1-3 years

- 3 doses in infancy give protection for 3-5 years

- 4 appropriately spaced doses give protection of around 10 years

- 5th dose in adolescence and 6th dose in adulthood provides protection for 20-30 years.

Is tetanus immunization required after every Injury?

The answer is No

- It depends on two factors:

1. Type of wound

2. Immunization status

Let’s see various scenarios to understand better

* Scenario 1

Clean/minor injury or other wound and completely immunized against TT within the last  5 years- No need for vaccination/ Immunisation

Scenario 2

Clean/minor injury or other wound and completely immunized against TT in the last  5-10 years

- 1 booster dose of vaccine should be administered as soon as possible.

Scenario 3

Clean/minor injury and completely immunized against TT But more than 10 years ago

- 1 booster dose of vaccine should be administered as soon as possible.

Scenario 4

Other/ dirty injury and completely immunized against TT But more than 10 years ago -1 booster dose of vaccine should be administered along with Immunoglobulin as soon as possible.

Scenario 5

When immunization status is unknown

 - Clean/ minor wound = Complete course of immunization should be administered (3 doses with booster)

 - Other Wound = Complete course of immunization should be administered (3 doses with booster)  along with Immunoglobulin as soon as possible.

Hope this article helps you to understand Tetanus immunization better.
