DENTAL IMPLANT VS DENTURES

Dental implant is the most aesthetic procedure practiced, day- to-day. Implant is a replacement of tooth root over which the crown fabrication is done to achieve natural tooth appearance. Dental Implants are popular alternatives over dentures as it bestows fixed solution for the replacement of missing tooth.

Dental implant costs higher than the dentures but, requires fewer visits for complete treatment. Implants are easier to maintain as compared to dentures. Bone is better preserved in implant than in dentures, long term use of denture may lead to bone resorption due to pressure over hard and soft tissue of the oral cavity.

TYPES OF IMPLANTS

Based upon the location of insertion, dental Implants are of two types:

a. Endosteal implants, which are placed in the jaw bone.

b. Subperiosteal implants, which are placed under the gums just above the jaw bone.

MATERIAL USED IN DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental implant is mostly made of Titanium, which is compatible with the bone tissue and bonds well with the adjacent bone. Also, the use of titanium will not interfere with MRI scanning as it is a non-ferromagnetic metal in nature.

HOW SOON IMPLANT CAN BE PLACED AFTER EXTRACTION?

A dental implant can be placed immediately after extraction, but it is best to wait for three to six months after extraction to get a successful dental implant.

Waiting for very long time than required, may result in loss of bone making implant placement difficult.

DURABILITY OF A DENTAL IMPLANT

Dental Implants offer a fixed solution.

Once placed correctly, can last for long. The failure is 5 to 10 percent, if the desirable amount of bone health is limited. Miraculously, sometimes limited bone health may also accept implant successfully.
