Copper T or a Copper IUD is an intrauterine device which is used for birth control. While it is an effective method of birth control, many people are apprehensive about it because there are many myths related to the entire method of birth control.

Dr. Bimla Bansal, a gynaecologist is here to help you know more about those facts and myths:

Myth 1: IUDs are not effective after a certain period of time.

Fact: IUDs is a 99% successful contraceptive method. In fact, it is one of the most non-risky contraceptives as it is reversible whenever the couple wants.

Myth 2: Copper Ts work by aborting the foetus.

Fact: That’s not true. No fertilization takes place when the woman is using a Copper T.

Myth 3: IUDs cause cancer and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Fact: There is no reason why IUD will solely act as a medium to form cancerous growth in the body.

Myth 4: The use of IUDs creates a risk of birth defects in the child.

Fact: It doesn’t create any birth defects in the child but if the woman becomes pregnant with the IUD and it is removed prematurely, it has slight chances of miscarriage. IT is best to wait for some period as suggested by your gynaecologist.

It is recommended that a couple must visit a specialist gynaecologist before adopting any form of contraceptive.
