For some the teeth become yellow over time. Teeth get stained by consuming excess amounts of tea coffee and other staining foods. Over time they tend to look weathered, dull and faded.
For few others the teeth are stained form within due to either fluorosis or drugs like tetracycline. The exposure happens during the teeth forming years. Exposure to these tetracycline and fluoride after teeth are formed does not affect the teeth. Teeth whitening can be a the first step in bringing the zing back to your teeth.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

Teeth whitening is a procedure which whitens the teeth. Procedure involves the use of  an oxidizing agent such as  carbamide peroxide. The carbamide peroxide breaks up into Hydrogen peroxide and urea. The Hydrogen peroxide tends to dis-colorize or dissolve the stained organic component. It does this by releasing a free radical ( stain removing agent ) and water. This  method tends to bleach the organic component of the outer most layer of teeth. It leaches the coloring agent out of the organic matrix. Thus lightens the color of the teeth.
