Off late, the green tea fever has been on the rise and I see people drinking green tea in various forms and colours, innumerable opinions on different types of green teas and also see a few whom I call "Green tea addicts". Finally, after some internal probing, research and experiment, I realised that the timing we consume green tea needs to be taken care of for maximum benefits.
What does green tea contain, that it makes such a wonderful, healthy and a weight loss drink?
- Green tea is rich in antioxidants, or polyphenols which help in fighting diseases, prevent cancer growth, slows the ageing process, fights viral infections, reduces blood sugar and cholesterol and of course helps with weight loss.
- Green tea also contains caffeine which may need to be considered before consumption. Most green teas contain caffeine unless they are processed to decaffeinate. Tea bags are found to contain more caffeine and fewer antioxidants than loose tea leaves. Seeping in the leaves for a longer time will increase the caffeine content. So do not infuse for more than 4-5 minutes.
- Another group of compounds that most green teas contain are Tannins. These inhibit iron absorption in certain cases, therefore adding vitamin C in the form of lime can enhance iron absorption. Tannins may also interfere with any medication taken for blood pressure, heart diseases and depression. In fact, you need to consider well before drinking green tea if you are on any medication.
Considering this, how do we know when to drink green tea?
- Never drink green tea on empty stomach. Beginning the day with a dose of caffeine can be delirious as it can affect the stomach balance. Instead, drink a glass of warm water with lime and honey or simply opt for a fruit.
- I have seen a lot of people drinking green tea after a good, delicious meal. You can do this if you do not need iron to your body. Drink green tea immediately after meals can inhibit nutrient absorption, which means, whatever you eat is not absorbed properly as the caffeine and tannins act as a block. This can also dilute the gastric juice resulting in improper digestion. So never drink green tea at least for 30- 45 minutes before and after meals.
- Green tea can be a great stimulant to your nervous system and therefore its preferable to drink during the day. Avoid green tea late in the evenings as it can interfere with your sleep pattern and can increase the stress inside the body. Its also a diuretic and may result in frequent urination disturbing your sleep. In a nutshell, get rid of your green tea addiction, replace it for your regular tea, and sip your favourite cup of green tea only between meals. Never before or after meals or first thing in the morning. Its best to drink green tea as a mid-morning or early evening drink.Remember, high doses of polyphenols or antioxidants can result in liver damages and toxicity.
About 2-3 times per day can be an ideal consumption!!!
