Most of my patients have this question when they are advised for Dental Crowns (commonly referred to as Caps) after root canal treatment .Is It really needed AFTER Root Canal Treatment??Well, the answer is YES ! not just needed but it's very IMPORTANT. Here's Why-After root canal treatment is done the crown structure is not functionally capable of withstanding chewing forces as its core had to be drilled to gain access to root canal treatment. So cap is needed to support and strengthen your tooth.Second most important decisions you will have to make when receiving a new cap is the material you would like to use, many times the decision comes down to a matter of preference: zirconia vs. porcelain fused to metal cap. During your consultation, we can explain the differences between the two materials to help you feel confident about your decision. Exploring the Differences Between Zirconia and Porcelain cap. Both zirconia and porcelain offer lifelike teeth color appearance and can be used to craft dental crowns, bridges. The zirconia  cap produces greater translucency, so the crown reflect light in the same manner as natural teeth. Because of their exceptional durability and strength, zirconia crown generally last longer than pfm cap. While porcelain crowns usually need replacement after a few years Last but not the least -: Do PFM crowns or bridges has to be removed before MRI or CT scan X-Ray imaging of head and neck region? The metal base of PFM crown or bridge can interfere in MRI or CT scan procedure of head and neck area and radiologist can advise for removal of PFM crown or bridge before the scan procedure. We advise for metal free zirconia crowns to overcome this future issue forever.Zirconia crowns typically cost more than other types of dental crowns, such as ceramic, metal, and porcelain. They range in price from 8000 to 15000 rupees. Your geographic location, dentist experience and clinic infrastructure can also affect the cost. What precaution or difficulty one have after crown or bridge placement? You shouldn't feel any discomfort or sensitivity after a crown is placed. However, if your tooth has not had a root canal it will still contain the nerve. You may therefore have some temporary sensitivity to heat and cold. If you notice pain or sensitivity when you bite down, contact us. Usually this means that the crown is too high. This can be adjusted easily. You may notice a thin, dark line next to the gumline on your crowned tooth if you look very closely in the mirror, particularly if you have a PFM crown. This dark line is the metal of the crown showing through and is normal.A crowned tooth is protected from decay, except for the gum line. We may prescribe a mouthwash or proxa brush/ floss for you to use every night to protect against decay. A crown does not protect against gum disease. You should continue practicing good oral hygiene.Feel free to ask us regarding any queries..http:/ www.beingdentist.comiuthkolkata
