All You Need Need to Know About Root Canal Treatment

Well, a root canal is a treatment to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth. The procedure involves removing the damaged area of the tooth (the pulp), cleaning and disinfecting it and then filling and sealing it.
The term "root canal" comes from cleaning of the canals inside the tooth's root. It is primarily an endodontic procedure which is either done by an endodontist, or an experienced and trained dentist.

X-ray – if a dentist suspects you may need a root canal, he will first take X-rays or examine existing X-rays to show where the decay is located.

Pulpectomy – an opening is made and the diseased tooth pulp is removed.
Filling – the roots that have been opened (to get rid of the diseased pulp) are filled with gutta-percha material and sealed off with cement.
Also, remember that a root canal treated tooth becomes weak as all the blood supply to it is now permanently stopped. hence it would require some exterior protection to protect it from the pressure generated from biting and chewing.
This is called Crowning of teeth. A Crown is cemented over the root canal treated tooth to provide strength and protect the tooth. Please note that this is a prosthetic procedure and requires a good prosthodontist, who understands the dental anatomy very well. Otherwise, a bad dental crown can cause long-term problems and produce damages for the tooth and the bone as well. Usually, the dentist takes an impression for the crown and sends it over to a lab for manufacturing.
So, the next time you are being suggested a root canal, look out for the specialty of the dentist, his experience, and what material and technology they are using for the Crowns.
