Breast Reduction Surgery

Dr. Kapil Agarwal, Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon
Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is for a woman experiencing health problems and/or extreme self-consciousness associated with very large, heavy breasts. The main complains are backache, neck pain and skin rashes or itching along with difficulty in carrying large breasts. The goal is to give the woman a more attractive contour with smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of her body. She will then benefit from freedom of health problems associated with large breasts and an improved self-image.Medical problems associated with very large breasts include-back and neck pain caused by the excessive weight, skin irritation, skeletal deformities and breathing problems. Bra straps may leave shoulder indentations. Large, heavy breasts also contribute to poor posture, and can interfere with normal daily activities such as exercise. Excessive breast size may also lead to a decreased sense of attractiveness and self-confidence.THE PROCEDUREBreast reduction is done under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis or in the hospital. The surgery removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple.Incisions are made around the pigmented nipple-areolar complex and extend vertically below the nipple and in the fold under the breast. The nipple-areolar complex is moved upward to the desired location. The incisions are covered with a light dressing.Afterward, the breasts are placed in a surgical bra that will hold them symmetrically during initial healing. Initial discomfort subsides daily and can be controlled with oral medications. Scars will fade in 6-18 months. Surgery will likely reduce, but not eliminate the ability to breast-feed.RECOVERY: WHAT TO EXPECTWhen performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, breast reduction is a safe procedure. Nevertheless, as with any surgery, there is always a possibility of complications, including bleeding, infection, or reaction to the anesthesia. Some patients develop small sores around their nipples after surgery; these can be treated with antibiotic creams. You can reduce your risks by closely following your physician’s advice both before and after surgery.Much of the swelling and bruising disappears in the first few weeks following the surgery. Breasts may appear slightly mismatched, or have unevenly positioned nipples. Their new shape will be apparent within 6 months to a year, and will depend on hormonal fluctuations, weight changes and pregnancy.Although your surgeon will make your scars as inconspicuous as possible, some permanent scarring is inevitable. Smokers are more likely to experience poor healing and wider scars. The scars will be red and lumpy in the months following the surgery, but the redness will fade and in time the scars will be less obvious.ABILITY TO BREASTFEEDBecause the surgery removes many of the milk ducts leading to the nipples, breast-feeding may no longer be an option. Some patients may experience a permanent loss of feeling in their nipples or breasts. Rarely, the nipple and areola may lose their blood supply and the tissue will die. (The nipple and areola can usually be rebuilt, however, using skin grafts from elsewhere on the body.)THE END RESULTBreast reduction produces the most dramatic results of all plastic surgeries. It ends the physical discomfort or large breasts and makes your body appear more evenly proportioned, and clothes fit better. Your new image will take some getting used to, as much as you desired the change. Give yourself—and your family and friends—time to adjust to the new you and, like most women, you will enjoy the benefits.www.kapilsmakeover.com

7 Reasons That Can Cause Breast Enlargement

Dr. Amar Deep, Homeopath
Causes of Breast Size Change:HormonalHormonal factors are the single most important cause of changes in a woman’s breast size over a short period of time. It can occur with or during:Menstrual cyclePubertyPregnancyUse of oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapyMenopauseGynecological diseases such as poly-cystic ovarian disease (PCOS)The female hormones causes enlargement of the milk-producing tissue in the breast and may also contribute to breast swelling by the way of temporary fluid accumulation. Hormones can also increase the fat content within the breast over the long term.InjuryTrauma to the breast causes inflammation. This increases the permeability of the blood vessels in the breast and fluid leaks out into the tissue spaces. It may be caused by :Blow to the breastRough handlingTight brassieresSurgery to the breastInflammation is a temporary process and the swelling is accompanied by pain, redness and heat over the skin. It is typically acute and resolves over a short period of time. Anti-inflammatory drugs are often effective in reducing most of the symptoms of inflammation. Usually only one breast is affected.Breast DiseaseVarious breast diseases can present with changes in breast size either through inflammation, loss or gain of fat tissue in the breast, the formation of growths and the accumulation of pus. This can affect one or both breasts. These breast diseases include :Fibrocystic breast diseaseBenign breast tumorsBreast cancerMastitis (breast infection)Breast abscessBreast cystGalactorrheaAny change in the breast size or shape has to first be investigated medically before it can be determined whether it is a physiological alteration or due to some pathology (disease). The presence of other symptoms like pain or tenderness, redness, heat, lumps, nipple discharge, changes in nipple appearance and bleeding from the breast are usually indicative of some underlying disease of the breast. However, changes in breast size without other symptoms may not mean it is not due to any disease – it is possible that it is just the first symptom and other symptoms will arise at a later stage. It should be noted though, that the breast size can change with hormonal factors that are in many cases just a normal part of life. Therefore the alteration in breast size may be innocuous and is not a symptoms of any breast disease.

Breasts under go a lot of changes in time. Pregnancy and lactation often changes the shape of the breasts making it more loose or saggy. Deflated or droopy shapeless breasts is a confidence breaker. There are a wide range of definitive surgical options from implants to lifts to regain your lost confidence.Breast augmentation(breast implants) is suitable for women who perceive their breasts as being too small, either because they have never had full development of breast tissue or as a result of the loss of breast tissue that sometimes occurs after pregnancy and breast-feeding. Small breasts may also be due to massive weight loss. If breast sagging accompanies small breast volume, a breast uplift operation, Mastopexy, may be required. The enlargement can be done by either using an breast implant (silicone/saline) or by Natural breast augmentation using fat. The breast augmentation (breast implant) surgery does not usually alter breast function. Since the operation does not interfere with breast tissue, the possibility of breast-feeding after pregnancy remains unaltered. It must be remembered that not all women can breast-feed successfully anyway - the important point here being that the breast will function the same after treatment as before. There may be altered nipple sensation. Additionally, breast implants do not increase or decrease the chances of developing breast cancer. Hundreds of thousands of augmentation mammoplasties (breast implants) have been performed worldwide and there has never been any demonstrated relationship between breast implants and breast cancer or any other breast disease. Breast implant surgery usually is done on a day care basis. You can go home the same day after the breast implant surgery. Other than surgical correction - using Breast implants or the person's own body fat - there is no method that can increase the size and fullness of the breasts. Unfortunately, no amount of exercise, hormonal treatment or creams can have any noticeable effect on the dimensions of small breasts. This is why breast augmentation (breast implants) has become a very popular method of enhancing the female form. Breast augmentation (breast implants) has been successful world-wide and has helped many women attain a better figure, which in turn has made an important psychological contribution to their feelings of femininity, confidence, well-being and happiness. Physical and psychological factors are closely linked here; thus, patients are carefully assessed and guided in realising their expectations. Breast Implant Surgery is a day care procedure generally taking 45 mins to an hour unless it is combined with any other procedure like a lift. Swelling will be present for a few weeks during which a snugly fitting sports bra is encouraged. Massaging can be started within 3 weeks while taking a shower. Sexual activity can be resumed with in a month.

Breast Self Examination

Dr. Manpreet Singh Bindra, Oncologist
Step 1 Begin by looking at your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Here's what you should look for:Breasts that are their usual size, shape, and colorBreasts that are evenly shaped without visible distortion or swellingIf you see any of the following changes, bring them to your doctor's attention:Dimpling, puckering, or bulging of the skinA nipple that has changed position or an inverted nipple (pushed inward instead of sticking out)Redness, soreness, rash, or swellingStep 2 Now, raise your arms and look for the same changes.Step 3 While you're at the mirror, look for any signs of fluid coming out of one or both nipples (this could be a watery, milky, or yellow fluid or blood).Step 4 Next, feel your breasts while lying down, using your right hand to feel your left breast and then your left hand to feel your right breast. Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together. Use a circular motion, about the size of a quarter.Cover the entire breast from top to bottom, side to side — from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage.Follow a pattern to be sure that you cover the whole breast. You can begin at the nipple, moving in larger and larger circles until you reach the outer edge of the breast. You can also move your fingers up and down vertically, in rows, as if you were mowing a lawn. This up-and-down approach seems to work best for most women. Be sure to feel all the tissue from the front to the back of your breasts: for the skin and tissue just beneath, use light pressure; use medium pressure for tissue in the middle of your breasts; use firm pressure for the deep tissue in the back. When you've reached the deep tissue, you should be able to feel down to your ribcage.  Step 5 Finally, feel your breasts while you are standing or sitting. Many women find that the easiest way to feel their breasts is when their skin is wet and slippery, so they like to do this step in the shower. Cover your entire breast, using the same hand movements described in step 4.Self examination at home can be helpful in early diagnosis of Benign and Malignant Breast Diseases.  In case of any finding as mentioned above, immediately visit your GP or Specialist for quick examination and diagnosis.
