Dr. Atul Kakar is presently working as Senior Consultant and Vice Chairman in Department of Internal Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital & associated hospitals, New Delhi. He is Professor of Medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (GRIPMER). The post includes taking independent rounds inwards, taking clinical decisions and supervising all ward activities including procedures. Besides this, the other duties include teaching postgraduate students, staff and supervising the teaching schedules. He conducts bedside clinics for postgraduates and registrars in a daily ward round. Academic Wing of Association of Physicians of India had awarded him a fellowship of Indian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians Glasgow conferred him with an FRCP. He has done further training in HIV management and fellowship in Rheumatology. He has a special interest in diabetes. He also conducts free OPDs for medical patients, where besides medicine he also sees patients with HIV and Rheumatology twice a week. He has started Osteoporosis special clinic once a week in the hospital. Besides this, he holds private OPD for four hours per day. He is also actively involved in organizing medical education programmes and conferences in the hospital. The department conducts Medicine update once a year, a popular event that caters to general practitioners and family physicians. He was the Organising secretary of Medicine update in years 2000, 2002 and 2006. Besides this, he has also organized Rheumatology update in the year 2003 as a Secretary with the special theme of ‘Rheumatology In General Practice”. In 2007, he was the Organizing Secretary of Annual Delhi Chapter of Rheumatology. He has been the faculty member for many conferences of Rheumatology at the national level. He was the Treasurer of Delhi Rheumatology Association from 2010 to 2014 and member of Governing body of Association of Physicians of India, Delhi State Chapter from 2011 and executive member of Delhi Rheumatology Association. He is the examiner for Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, which holds the examination in various international countries. He is also an examiner for Bhutan Postgraduate college and formative assessment for Diplomate National Board Students Formative Assessment Test. He has also been a guide for many students for their thesis and research work. He is involved in many clinical drug trials for which I am the principal investigator. These trials are on Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Amyloidosis and Influenza. He is an active member of GRIPMER, Governing body, actively participates and contributes to academics in the institution. He was founder secretary of Sir Ganga Ram Alumni Association, was involved in various activities like inception ceremony (2011), Alumni Oration (2012 & 2013), and designed souvenir for the association. He is the editor for Health Series published by Elsevier’s. This contains 16 titles – Bone Health, Sexual Health, Care during Pregnancy and Care of Newborn, Mental health, Liver disease, Heartburn, Cancer, Cancer in women, Blood cancer, Heart attack are few titles. These books are available for non-professionals to answer simple day to day queries about simple topics. For public education, he released, “My Bone App” on occasion of National Bone & Joint Day 2015 along with Arthritis Foundation of India. This is a phone app, which can be downloaded from Google play store and educates people about risk factor and treatment options for bone diseases. His article on Socio-economic Impact of H1N1 was published in Current Medicine Research & Practice 2015 and was covered extensively in major newspapers like Times of India, Hindustan Times, Economic Times, Indian Express, Tribune, Statesman, Asian Age, Millenium Post and Hindi paper-like, Hindustan, Amar Ujala, Dainik Jagran and Nav Bharat Times to name few on 4th & 5th August 2015.He has more than 130 publications both international and national and citation index for Google scholar citation, H-Index, Research Gate and RG score are high.
