My partner is a 31 year old woman. (We are a same sex couple). Cancer runs in her family. Her mother died of breast cancer when she was only 34 years old. Her mother's sister also had breast cancer after that and might probably have it again. Her mother's sister is currently 55 years old. So, what are the chances that my partner might get cancer in the future too? She will be going for a BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene test. What if she has inherited the cancer gene? If so, will it be breast cancer or any kind of cancer? She also smokes occasionally but wants to quit it. What can she do to prevent it?
Breast cancer can run into generation is true and yes she is at high risk compared to a female with no family history but that doesn't mean she will definitely have cancer in future. Depends on genetic testing further details as risk of other cancers can be discussed.
Next Steps
go for genetic counseling and testing
regular screening including clinical breast examination with doctor and further regular imaging.

Going ahead with the BRCA1 and BRCA2 test is the right call. Your family history does place you in a higher risk group, though it does not mean you will develop cancer.
Next Steps
Please have the result explained by a genetic counsellor, who can set a screening schedule suited to your family history.
Health Tips
A positive gene result mainly raises breast and ovarian risk, not every cancer, and stopping smoking helps either way.
