Schizophrenia is a psychotic illness which develops and manifests due to interplay of multiple potential factors like genes, birth injuries, stresses, substance misuse etc. It manifests with symptoms of abnormal beliefs, thoughts, perceptions and dysfunctional behavior. It can effectively be treated with medicines, psychological treatment like cognitive behavior therapy, family therapy, lifestyle modifications, relapse prevention, social inclusion work etc. Yes, unfortunately it is an illness with relapsing and remitting nature due to the complexity of causes and hence, a holistic approach as mentioned above would be effective in most people with schizophrenia.
