Weight gain

I am trying to gain weight but have failed to do so for the past 2 years now.
I play basketball and have a high metabolism. I would like to refrain from the supplements too, if possible.
Any remedies?
Also, is smoking a prime factor for this?

Add more of dried fruit, meat, poultry, milk, eggs, green leafy vegetables, fresh fruit.
Consult physician for thyroid profile.
