Based on your history, your symptoms are most likely due to a combination of vitamin B12 deficiency–related tongue changes, dryness of mouth, and anxiety-related over-focus, rather than any serious disease. When vitamin B12 levels are low, it can cause: • Redness and burning sensation of the tongue (called atrophic glossitis) • Dry mouth • Increased sensitivity of the oral lining Even after B12 treatment, the tongue and nerve endings may take weeks to months to fully recover, so mild burning or redness can recur temporarily. Cold weather and dry indoor heating (common in the USA) can significantly worsen dry mouth and tongue irritation, especially in the morning. Checking the tongue repeatedly and worrying about every small change can amplify the burning sensation. Anxiety itself can cause or worsen a condition called burning mouth syndrome, where the tongue looks mostly normal but feels uncomfortable. The asymmetry and small color variations you are noticing are very common and usually normal. The dark area you mentioned, if unchanged for months and not growing or painful, is very unlikely to be dangerous, but should still be examined once by a doctor for reassurance.
Next Steps
1. Do not keep checking your tongue frequently this increases sensitivity and anxiety 2. Continue vitamin B12 supplementation as advised by your doctor; improvement is gradual 3. Keep yourself well hydrated, especially in cold weather 4. Avoid spicy food, very hot drinks, smoking, alcohol, and excess caffeine 5. Get a direct oral examination by an ENT or dentist once for reassurance
