Thallasemia eletrophoresis
Sir, I am Subhajit and my wife is Moumita. We are expecting a baby. Moumita is now pregnant for a month while. We have recently advised to check Thallasemia eletrophoresis by our gynecologist. We got the report and I have found Hb E heterozygous and my wife has beta thalassemia trait. Whether we both are a thalassemia carrier ? Whether our baby will be a thalassemia major or a carrier ?

Most cases of Thalassemia are inherited as recessive. You are Hb E Heterozygous that means you have one healthy and one affected trait. Wife has beta thalassemia trait. You can give one of this. So depending on that child may or may not be major. It is recommended that you go for genetic counseling and investigation for confirmation.
