If you are having a lot of calculus in your teeth then the calculus would have already detached the gums from teeth and bone resorption has started. To prevent this you have to clean the teeth with a dentist every 6months- 1 yr.
Scaling is recommended Atleast in the minimum on a yearly basis as it clears the accumulated plaque and calculus deposits and maintains Gum health and prevents hallitosis. It's a complete misconception to think that it would do any gum damage.
