It's a myth created by people. If you are having a lot of calculus in your teeth then the calculus would have already detached the gums from teeth and bone resorption has started. To prevent this you have to clean the teeth with a dentist every 6months- 1 yr.

Scaling is recommended Atleast in the minimum on a yearly basis as it clears the accumulated plaque and calculus deposits and maintains Gum health and prevents hallitosis. It's a complete misconception to think that it would do any gum damage.

Hi, Scaling is the process where mild vibration is used to remove tartar that has been deposited between the teeth and gums. Such deposition of tartar is the cause for gum problems. Presence of tartar for a long period of time will cause permanent damage to your gums and further to your teeth. So removal of tartar will keep your gums healthy. There is no harm but but more benefits in getting a scaling done by a professional.
