Spotting and pregnancy test

I am 29 year old female and my expected period date is the 18th of May. Yesterday i had cramps and checked i had a slight spotting which was just enough to see in tissue paper. After that I didn't see any flow only white discharge. Usually whenever I get periods it's with medium flow from day one. This evening i happened to take a pregnancy test which was negative. Am i supposed to wait or what is it
