Severe instance of chronic constipation
Severely constipated for 3 days. Chronic. Have been taking since yesterday morning: Metamucil 3x/day, docusate sodium 300 mg/day, polyethylene glycol 3350 17g 1x/day. Today repeated bouts of severe strain and pain lasting 10-30 mins. Attempts to defecate involve much strain, apparently a stool I cannot pass.

Constipation at older age either due to functional problems or structural problem.  Basically if it is temporary you need laxatives.  But if it is chronic you need evaluation.  Basic blood stool thyroid tests and colonoscopy to rule out structural diseases.
