As per your description looks like sciatica ie radiculopathy
Why taking steroid ?
Considering recent preganancy its can happen as there is change in posture cause sprain on back which ultimately leads to herniation
Transforaminal epidural injection is better option for her considering she is lactating
She needs to undergo MRI to find out wether the cause of pain is her intervertebral disc
Post pregnancy sacroiliac joint pain is also very common
In that patient experience pain in the buttock and leg long sitting can aggravate pain pain more in the morning hours

This is a chronic pain and it cannot be treated with just medication, it needs back and core strengthening
As you said , you have a small kid at home, so lifting him and nursing him continously, she needs to bend her back and tat again causes more pain.
Next Steps
better to start physiotherapy as soon as possible and stick to the exercises. definitely it is treatable.
