“I am currently 10 weeks pregnant and I am abroad now. When I consulted a doctor here, they said I have gestational diabetes and advised me to monitor it regularly. For the first 3 months they prescribed folic acid 1 mg tablets, but the doctor in my home country had told me to take 5 mg. They also prescribed capsules containing ferrous fumarate, folic acid, vitamin B12, and zinc sulphate monohydrate because my platelet count is generally low. Can I take this capsule together with the folic acid tablet? And I have hypothyroidism ( thyronorm 100 mg tablets) how can I get a proper sugar control and how to manage that in my whole pregnancy life.

Hi congratulations for your pregnancy . Yes you need tab folic acid 5 mgs as you have diabetes . And since you are 10 weeks only , and if you do not have any nausea and vomiting in pregnancy you can take rest of the medications prescribed . If they advised you to monitor on diet your sugars that’s reassuring . So concentrate on diet And exercise daily 30 mins walk recommended . Buy Glucometre and monitor the sugars fasting and post lunch one hour and post dinner one hour . It has to be in range . I am sure they must have adviced you . And TSH and FT4 every 4 weeks monitor . If you want to discuss in detail you can get connected with me tomorrow . Good luck dear .

Yes, you can take the iron capsule containing ferrous fumarate, folic acid, vitamin B12, and zinc along with folic acid tablets. Both doses are generally safe in pregnancy. Continue your thyroid medication as advised. Next Steps: Monitor fasting and post-meal blood sugars regularly, follow a diabetic diet, and have periodic follow-up with an obstetrician for proper pregnancy and thyroid monitoring. Helpful Tip: Eat small frequent meals, limit refined sugars/carbohydrates, and include protein and fiber in your diet to help maintain good sugar control

Hello dear , if you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes , it is imperative that you take the utmost care to keep your blood sugar levels well under control , as uncontrolled blood sugars  can adversely affect both you and your baby . Such treatment cannot be done on an online platform and requires expert care . Please choose a good gynaec with experience in high risk pregnancies to guide you through your pregnancy. The first step to sugar control is always through diet ( low carb, low sugar , high proteins and fibre moderate fats) and excercise ( Daily half hourly walks ) . However , only your treating physician can indivisualise your management to your specific case and decide what is best for you . You can take both capsules together. Thyroid medication to continue . Keep careful watch that your BP does not rise through your pregnancy. Folic acid 5 mg would be on the safer side in your case .
Next Steps
Make sure your are in good hands .
