By the latest definition of GDM this falls under pre pregnancy diabetes if your sugar levels are high for pregnancy. GDM appears only in 2nd or 3rd trimester of diabetes.
The hyperglycemia during this phase needs to be strictly controlled because it can adverse affect development of embryo
