After decades of smoking I have lost much of sense of smell and difficulty sensing moisture in the air in my nose. It is very dry. I have quit now for a few days and notice smell is a little better. Can you explain exactly why smell typically improves after quitting smoking and if I might improve sensation and mucus production?

Sorry but it is hard to explain over this message. Smoking usually causes the smell nerve damage which leads to poor sense of smell. You can certainly get further information in emedicine website.
