MPFL Reconstruction
I had a mpfl reconstruction on my left knee . My patella got dislocated and mcl got torn . I am in my 20 days of Physiotherapy n I'm still unable to bend my knee to 90degree . My muscles have become weak and bending is too painful . I'm scared if I ever be able to bend my knee again . I'm able to walk though with little limps . But my range if motion is becoming a nightmare. Im continuously doing my exercises but still range of motion is way painful for me to bear . Could you please let me know if it's ok to relax and get the range of motion quite easily after a month ? I'm loosing self confidence cz of this . But still Im not giving up on my exercise which I do 24/7 . I'm not sure wen I could bend my knee like before !!

Core Strengthening Exercise- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams Stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. repeat 10 times, twice a day. Quadriceps Exercises- Lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain.

Since you are hardly three weeks into rehab,  you've no reason to worry.  As mpfl was operated upon,  it's likely your patellar mobility is hindering free mobility of knee too.  Patellar mobilization to a large extent can help knee mobility. If soreness is felt you can apply ice. If scars have well healed,  two to three hours of dressing with well stirred glycerine magnesium sulphate paste can help bring down local inflammation. A simple self bending exercise can be done by looping a  lengthwise folded bed sheet around the leg just above the ankle, dragging heel over bed; pulling well with both hands in lying on your back. You can self assess the progress by checking how far the heel has gone, targeting the heel to just above the knee of other leg. Strengthening exercises should also go along ranging exercises so that you can gain independence very soon.  It's advisable not to stop altogether unless it's too sore. But frequency of exercises in a day may be brought down as per your physiotherapist's advice.  Hope the information was useful to you...

Hello there,,,,,MPFL surgery requires grafting of tendons...and ther is a reason why Rehabilation stage is set for 4-8-12-16 weeks.....you say you are in the 20th day of rehab...ie almost 3 weeks...let me tell you practically at the 6th week ie on 36th day you should be able to bend your knee to 90 degrees...your initial rehab should focus on strengthning your muscles of knee joint...also wear a knee brace in extenction strictly for any gait training activity .... have patience and positive attitude....also dont overdo exercises.to Explain Rehab protocol for MPFL is beyond the scope of this forum. Regards & Take care.
