Loose motions
My child is 5.5 years old(weighs 19 kgs). He had 4 loose motions since morning with a very bad smell. I am giving ORS, banana, curd to him but it would be great if you can suggest some medicine for loose motions. It's Sunday today, so doctors are not available here nearby. Thankyou

-Loose motions in children are commonly due to viral stomach infection or food-related infection -If the child is active, drinking fluids, and passing urine normally, it is usually manageable at home initially
Next Steps
-Continue ORS after every loose stool in small frequent sips -Syp Zincovit/Z&D drops or Zinc syrup equivalent once daily for 14 days -Sachet Sporolac or Enterogermina probiotic once/twice daily for 3–5 days -Avoid outside food, oily food, and packaged juices -If fever, vomiting, blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, dehydration, or >8–10 stools/day occur, consult pediatrician urgently
Health Tips
-Continue banana, curd, rice, khichdi, coconut water, and light diet -Maintain proper hand hygiene and safe drinking water -Do not start antibiotics without medical advice -Contact me anytime on Practo for further consultatio

At this age, loose motions are very commonly manageable, especially when the child is active and able to take fluids, so please don’t panic 👍 Since the child is still young and dehydration can develop quickly, a proper consultation would help assess severity, hydration status, diet tolerance, and whether any medicines or investigations are actually needed. Early guidance usually helps children recover faster and prevents unnecessary complications.

A 5.5-year-old child experiencing 4 loose motions with a strong foul smell suggests an acute episode of Gastroenteritis, which could be either viral or bacterial. Since the child weighs 19 kg and is currently accepting ORS and light food (Banana, Curd), the primary goal is to maintain hydration and restore gut health. The foul smell often indicates that the infection is still active in the intestines, but as long as the child is active and not vomiting, it can be managed carefully at home."
Next Steps
Hydration is Key: "Continue giving ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) after every loose motion. A child of this weight should aim for 100–150 ml of fluid after each episode to prevent dehydration." BRAT Diet: "Focus on Banana, Rice, Apple sauce, and Toast. Curd is excellent as it acts as a natural probiotic. Avoid milk, sugary juices, and oily foods for the next 48 hours." Red Flags (Emergency): "Seek immediate medical attention if the child becomes very lethargic, has sunken eyes, stops passing urine for more than 6-8 hours, or develops a high-grade fever." Caution: "Do NOT give any anti-motility medicines (like Loperamide) to a 5.5-year-old child as they can trap the infection inside the body."

Firstly, You are doing all that can be done at home. Continue doing that- Hydration and nutrition. I request you to not be worried with loose motions as long as the little one is accepting water and eating periodically.
Next Steps
please give Enterogermina vial one in the morning, noon and night. start tonight.open the vial by twisting the head end and squeeze the entire vial in the mouth. Do this for 2 days. ideally will not need antibiotics. This will definitely buy you time in case a paediatrician visit is required.
Health Tips
avoid eggs, force feeding milk.
