Based on the MRI findings, surgery is not always necessary, even at the age of 75. Treatment depends more on your father’s symptoms than the MRI report. If he is able to walk and does not have repeated locking or instability of the knee, many patients improve with medications, supervised physiotherapy, activity modification, and appropriate pain management. However, if the knee is getting locked, repeatedly giving way, or the pain remains severe despite conservative treatment, an Orthopaedic surgeon should evaluate him for possible arthroscopic treatment. A detailed clinical examination is essential before deciding on surgery. You can also book an online consultation with me to review the MRI and advise the most appropriate treatment.
Next Steps
1.Consult an Orthopaedic surgeon with the MRI images (not just the report).
2.Start/continue supervised physiotherapy if advised.
3.Use pain medication only as prescribed.
4.If there is knee locking, inability to straighten the knee, or recurrent instability, seek an early Orthopaedic review.
Health Tips
Do not decide on surgery based on the MRI report alone. In elderly patients, MRI abnormalities are common, and treatment should be guided by symptoms, physical examination, activity level, and overall health.
