Any injury to knee can be two type bony injury and soft tissue injury (ligaments & meniscus).
Bone injury seen on x-rays.
Soft tissue injury best seen on MRI.
If it old there can be less likely bony injury. And if it's few week old get knee x-rays done ...
If knee x-rays are clear no bone injury there can be soft tissue injury.
Swelling bump which part front back side ways.?

as history incomplete . I can suggest u
- rest
- limb elevation over two pillow with pillow supporting knee also or else it will get stiff and more painful.
- ice pack ( do not apply direct to skin put in thin cloth) 20 min for 7 days thrice per day
- volini gel small quantity other wise it will burning feel.
apply thrice per day.
- for medicine consult us on practo or near by local Orthopaedic doctor.
physiotherpy:-
ultrasound therapy for knee joint
for 5 days once /day .
basic static quadriceps excersies
ankle toe strech excersies.
