Gum smelling after RCT
Recently i had a RCT for two teeth side by side. After a week I can observe foul smell at the gum below the Crown. My dentist removed a small plaque and said to me to use a gum ointment(Sensopride) so that it will set right. But the problem still continues after 2 weeks. No pain. A very light black shade can be observed at the gum. Now what does it mean? RCT failed? Pls suggest next action.

It is better to consult a dentist and take a radiograph and verify as to what is happening.

Sir , the description which you are giving according to that the marginal fit of the crown seems to be improper due to which the food is getting lodged in that area which on disintegration causes foul smell.

Hi, looking at the history what you gave ,there can be few reasons to this problem 1) The margins of the crown might not be flushing well with the tooth 2) There can be a possibility of a gap between the to crowns or between crown and tooth due to improper seating of crown , which is giving rise to bad smell and swelling from the gums. I wouldn't think of a failing root canal at first because symptoms of that would be little different like swelling more towards the root of the tooth and not towards the crown But yes if the margins of the crown are not seating well on the tooth and there is a leakage , that might cause a failed root canal in future
Next Steps
get a Radiograph done to check the quality of root canal done and to check the seating of the crown
Health Tips
eliminate any sort of vertical crack in the tooth through a dental examination

No.RCT is working just fine..next action to be taken is to go for one xray to see any bone loss due to pocket.foul smell at the gum may be because of the food lodgement between the two crown due to which a pocket can develop and this explains the black colour
Next Steps
Go for a x ray and then crowns over the root canal treated teeth
Health Tips
Keep the area clean by using a chlorhexidine/hydrogen peroxide based mouthwash

Please check whether rct is completed or not with your doctor. In some cases if there is any pus formation it might stink for few days. But we can't give the proper diagnosis without looking at the case clinically and radiologically. Dr. Satya's Multispeciality Dental Care, Seethammadhara

get xray done . many times food lodgement occurs between crowns so its very important to keep area clean . for that you can use interdental toothbrush or floss. also get scaling done every 6-8 months. if you have doubt about root canal get xray done and dentist can explain whether its proper or not.

according to your description the marginal fit of crown may not be accurate . but there can be other reasons also such as bone resorption or loss in between teeth. so best is after clinical diagnosis. and till that time you try to keep that area betwen teeth proper. by:- 1) use a floss to clean that area. 2) buy an interdental brush proxa , which can help u clean that area after every meal.
Next Steps
try these 2 steps also and show it to adnetist if the problem persists after this also.

Hi, the smell could be due to a gap between the teeth and below the gum area. Please check if the gums are inflamed? Bleeding? If yes please get the crown replaced ASAP. Once the contour is perfect between the teeth and no food lodgement would make the gums healthy and relief from foul smell. Dr Vikee, Teeth & More Dental Spa, B5/15 Safdarjung enclave, New delhi- 110029

Please get it checked with your dentist ASAP
Health Tips
Make sure you see the dentist quick and get this inflammation sorted.
