Gestational diabetes
I am 35 yrs old and 32 weeks pregnant. My hba1c is 5.1. I did test my sugar levels at home for sometime and my fasting sugar level is less than 100.. PP is usually between 120-130. My doc suggested metformin 1mg.. What should be the normal sugar level during fasting and PP? Also at what sugar level insulin is recommended?

Your sugar readings look quite good for this stage of pregnancy. In pregnancy, we aim for tighter glucose control to protect both mother and baby. During pregnancy, the normal fasting blood sugar should ideally be below 95 mg/dl, and the 2-hour post-meal (PP) value should be below 120 mg/dl. Your current numbers are very close to these targets, which is reassuring. HbA1c of 5.1 is also excellent and shows good control over the last few months. Metformin is sometimes used in pregnancy when sugar starts to rise slightly, especially if there’s a risk of gestational diabetes or a family history. Insulin is usually recommended only when diet and oral medicines do not maintain sugars within the target range, or if post-meal values frequently cross 130–140 mg/dl despite lifestyle control. You are doing well, so continue regular monitoring, maintain a balanced diet, and follow up with your doctor. First of all, in pregnant women, HbA1c is not a good tool specially after 15 weeks. The diagnosis of GDM is made on tha basis of FBS, 1 hour and 2 hour PPBS after 75 g glucose. Fasting should be less than 95 and 1 hour PP < 183 and 2 hour PP < 155. Your values within normal limit.

Your fasting and PP sugar are within range . HBA1C is also normal . For gestational diabetes fasting need to be above 140 and PP more than 160 and HBA1C above 6 Insulin will be needed above 200 . I don’t think any medication needed but follow your treating doctor
