Gave Barley Water to 5.5 month old baby
I followed a blog written by a doctor which mentioned barley water can be given to 5 month baby. So I started barley water for my 5.5 months old son. First day gave 2-3 spoons, second day gave 30 ml, third day gave 60 ml and fourth day gave 90 ml. Then a family member told me it may not be safe to give this much liquid to the baby. Should I continue giving barley water or stop? Is it not safe?

Hello At 5.5 months, your baby should ideally be on exclusive breast milk (or formula) — no additional water or traditional drinks like barley water are recommended before 6 months. Barley water may seem harmless, but: It can fill the stomach, reducing breastmilk intake and leading to nutritional deficiencies. Too much water or barley water can disturb electrolyte balance in infants. The baby’s digestive system is not yet ready for grains or water-based drinks before 6 months.
Next Steps
Stop giving barley water for now. Wait until your baby completes 6 months and is ready for safe, age-appropriate weaning foods, as per pediatric guidance. Resume exclusive breastfeeding/formula feeding until 6 months of age. After 6 months, you can start introducing solids — begin with iron-rich foods and age-appropriate home-cooked options.
Health Tips
Always check with your pediatrician before introducing anything new to your baby’s diet. Even traditional remedies should only be given if safe, age-appropriate, and necessary.
