Hello Doctor,
My sister is taking treatment for psychosis/schizophrenia. Earlier symptoms were self-talking, laughing, crying suddenly and aggression.
I want to know:
When can a psychiatrist give a fitness certificate for government job?
How long should she be stable on treatment?
Does past psychosis affect job eligibility if she is stable now?
Thank you.

Fitness is given by govt hospital fitness board, there is detailed history and assessment, after which certificate is issued, proper treatment history as well as documents are checked, with compliance of patient to treatment as well as currently functioning , there are also scales by which symptoms are decided and also recovery,

People can recover from psychosis within days or may not recover in their entire life time. These are 2 ends of a spectrum. There are no hard and fast timings. Fitness for a job depends on illness features, treatment response and recovery. Again it variea from person to person. Good luck

Hey, even with schizophrenia/psychosis person can work if the symptoms are managed well.
Past psychosis usually does not affect job eligibility! Also, the government has introduced now that for conditions like schizophrenia/psychosis disability certification to be given.
Next Steps
so, please do consult your Psychiatrist for certification
• A fitness certificate can be issued once she is clinically stable, insight is present, behavior is appropriate, and she is functioning well on treatment.
• Usually, 6–12 months of sustained stability (no active psychotic symptoms, good adherence) is preferred before certification, though it depends on job demands.
• Past psychosis does not automatically disqualify her from a government job if she is currently stable and functional. Final decision rests with the medical board, not just diagnosis.
Regular follow-up and documentation of stability are important.
