Dear friend, Psychotherapy is a wise choice of treatment. Number of sessions will depend on how you respond. Meanwhile practice the following steps. 1. Avoid eating non vegetarian foods 2. Increase intake of water 3. Go for regular walking 4. After coming back from walking sit comfortably in a place. Close your eyes. Breathe in deeply through nose and breathe out through the mouth. Repeat for 10 times. 5. After 4, keep eyes closed and just watch your breathe. Sit as long as you can. Remember to LET GO any thoughts during this time. Feel free to contact me for further guidance. Hello..First of all i would suggest that you keep your options open for treatment and not just go for therapy. In BPD,  people may have aggressive behaviors, mood swings or suicidal tendencies, drug abuse etc which may cause harm to the patient as well as family members. So it's important that let the professional decide whether you need medication or therapy or both. Medications help in acute states but therapy is for long-term. Also therapy requires time. In the western countries where there are specific DBT therapist, therapy sessions can go on for years. But i would suggest at least few months because relapses are common.

Hi, I am assuming that your diagnosis is given by a Psychiatrist after history taking and Psychological tests and not some random internet test. Now that you have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality disorder you may be given medication for symptom control, mainly depressive symptoms, aggression or mood swings. However for long term improvement in the disorder you will need Dialectical Behaviour Therapy(DBT) and maybe combination of some other therapies as decided by your  therapist(Psychiatrist or Psychologist). Minimum 8 -10 weeks sessions are there for DBT alone. However you can check for Marsha Lineman's DBT worksheets online. They are available as a PDF, they are self explanatory and you can do those on your own,  if motivated enough. They would mainly be mindfulness exercises and other techniques to help you gain emotional control, impulse control and improve your interpersonal relationships and self -esteem. There are also some books available by Marsha Lineman , she is the pioneer in DBT , you can check these out if you wish. Along with that you could visit a Psychiatrist who has experience with Borderline Personality patients or a Psychologist who has similar experience. With determination and consistency you can definitely become much better and lead a happy, fulfilling life. Hope this helps, All the Best!

hi, therapy is useful, but you need to get your evaluations done first. how beneficial it will be to u depends on how receptive you are. Also the number of sessions cannot be predicted, it depends on the severity and your receptiiveness. take care.

Hi there, Psychotherapy is the treatment of choice for Borderline personality disorder. You must realise however, that therapy is long process and it can get frustrating. Patience is the key. Regarding your query about the number of sessions required. That differs from patient to patient. Assuming that your diagnosis of BPD is right, I would urge to enrol into therapy and persist with as long as it takes. Good luck.

Hello dear, Before trying to answer your query, I must say that Borderline Personality Disorder is a diagnosis which should be established by a trained and experienced mental health specialist, and self diagnosis or a loose word of such terms may be detrimental to you and your health. In most cases a combination approach of medication and psychological intervention is used for treatment. However depending on symptom profile and severity approach of management needs to be optimized. You should meet a psychiatrist or a psychologist well versed with nuances of managing Borderline Personality Disorder for discussion modality of treatment. They will explore your issues and symptoms before deciding best treatment approach for you. In case you do not choose to receive medication then various forms of therapy like Dialectic Behavior therapy, Mindfulness based therapy, cognitive therapy may be used for management. Yes, cost may be a deterrent for therapy, and if that is a major concern you may go to a government sector hospital for management. Number of sessions cannot be commented before comprehensive assessment.
Next Steps
please consult a psychiatrist or a psychologist well versed with Borderline Personality Disorder for in person, face to face discussion, assessment and management.
Health Tips
discuss your aversion to medication with a psychiatrist and try to understand merits and demerits of each treatment approach including medication and psychotherapy..

Its appreciable that you are willing for therapy (many don't admit their problem). Then you must also be knowing that Borderline PD or Emotionally unstable PD is a condition which has strong biological basis involving multiple neurotransmitters, neural circuitry (like most other psychiatric illnesses). If symptoms cause dysfunction, sole psychotherapy (dielectic behaviour therapy) won't suffice. Medicines modulate the neurotransmitters and neural pathways....and enhance or quicken the psychotherapeutic effect. Also medicines help the client cope better in crisis moments.  Psychotherapy is gold standard for borderline PD....but then its time consuming....and the number of sessions depend on symptom severity and has individual variation. Consult a clinical psychologist who after assessing the symptomatology would be able to guide you regarding sessions.
