Blowing nose caused ear pain
Intense ear pain after blowing my nose since it was runny. Closing nostrils technique I think made it worse. What can I do for instant relief ?

Hi, I am Dr. Atul Kumar Nimawat MS ENT. Causes of your problem: When you blow your nose forcefully (especially by pinching/closing the nostrils), it can push air and mucus back into the Eustachian tube (the tube connecting your middle ear and throat). This can cause: • Barotrauma (pressure injury to the middle ear) • Middle ear effusion (fluid accumulation) • Sometimes even minor rupture of the eardrum if the pressure is too high. That’s why you have intense ear pain immediately afterward.
Next Steps
Do NOT blow your nose again forcefully. Yawning, swallowing, or chewing gum helps open the Eustachian tube and balance pressure. Warm compress over the ear (warm, not hot) can help soothe pain. Decongestant nasal sprays (like oxymetazoline) for a short time (1–2 days only) can reduce nasal swelling and help open the Eustachian tube. Painkillers like ibuprofen or paracetamol can help if the pain is strong.
Health Tips
If you develop hearing loss, ear discharge (especially blood or pus), vertigo, or pain not improving in 1–2 days, you must see an ENT doctor. It could mean a ruptured eardrum or middle ear infection (otitis media).
