Bad breath (halitosis) is most commonly associated with tongue coating, plaque accumulation, gum problems, dry mouth, poor oral hygiene, smoking, or inadequate water intake.
Next Steps
To help reduce bad breath while staying at home, follow these daily habits: • Brush your teeth twice daily for at least 2 minutes. • Clean your tongue thoroughly every morning and night using a tongue cleaner. • Floss or clean between teeth once daily. • Drink 2–3 litres of water throughout the day to prevent dry mouth. • Rinse your mouth with plain water after every meal. • Avoid tobacco products and smoking. • Limit foods such as onion, garlic, and other strongly scented foods if they worsen the odour. • Chew sugar-free gum after meals to stimulate saliva production. • Do not skip breakfast, as prolonged fasting can contribute to bad breath.
Health Tips
If bad breath persists despite maintaining good oral hygiene, a dental examination is recommended to rule out gum disease, cavities, wisdom tooth infections, or other underlying causes.

Hello, Bad breath (halitosis) is most commonly caused by plaque accumulation, tongue coating, gum disease, dry mouth, poor oral hygiene, smoking, digestive issues, or inadequate water intake. To reduce bad breath at home, follow these daily habits: • Brush your teeth twice daily for at least 2 minutes. • Clean your tongue every morning and night using a tongue cleaner. • Floss or clean between teeth once daily. • Drink 2–3 litres of water throughout the day to prevent dry mouth. • Rinse your mouth with plain water after every meal. • Avoid tobacco products and smoking. • Reduce intake of onion, garlic, and strongly scented foods if they worsen the odour. • Chew sugar-free gum after meals to stimulate saliva production. • Include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. If bad breath persists despite good oral hygiene, a dental examination is recommended to rule out gum disease, tooth decay, wisdom tooth infection, or other oral causes. Regards, Dr. Mohit Gautam BDS, MDS (Endodontist)
Next Steps
Follow the above measures consistently for 2–3 weeks. If bad breath continues, schedule a dental check-up.
Health Tips
In many cases, tongue coating is the major source of bad breath. Regular tongue cleaning can significantly improve mouth odour.

In my clinical experience, persistent bad breath or halitosis, most commonly originates directly from the oral cavity itself. When you are staying at home for an extended three-month period, subtle changes in your daily routine, eating habits, or even drinking less water can significantly worsen this issue. The odor you are experiencing is typically caused by anaerobic bacteria breaking down food particles, dead cells, and proteins inside your mouth. This process releases Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs), which smell unpleasant. To eliminate the odor permanently, my focus will be to help you mechanically disrupt this bacterial buildup and keep your salivary flow active.
Next Steps
I recommend that you adopt this highly effective, structured daily oral hygiene routine while you are at home: Scrape Your Tongue: I want you to use a dedicated tongue scraper twice a day, moving from the back of your tongue to the front. The very back of the tongue is where most odor-producing bacteria live. Clean Between Your Teeth: You should floss or use interdental brushes at least once a day before bed. Standard brushing misses the tight spaces between teeth where trapped food easily rots. Stay Well Hydrated: I advise you to drink 2 to 3 liters of water daily. A dry mouth lacks the protective, rinsing benefits of saliva, which allows bacteria to multiply rapidly. Use the Right Mouthwash: I recommend rinsing with an alcohol-free, antibacterial mouthwash containing zinc or cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) to neutralize odor compounds without drying out your mouth.
Health Tips
Watch Your Diet: Try to limit your intake of coffee, garlic, and onions, as these foods introduce strong compounds that enter your bloodstream and are exhaled through your lungs. When to See a Dentist: If you follow my recommended routine strictly for 2 to 3 weeks and notice no improvement, you need to see a dentist. We must rule out hidden issues like gum disease or deep cavities. Consider Other Causes: If your oral hygiene is spotless but the odor remains, I will need to investigate extra-oral causes, such as chronic sinus infections, tonsil stones, or acid reflux (GERD).

Hello Bad odour from mouth (halitosis) can be due to many reasons like poor oral hygiene, plaque deposits, tongue deposits, gums infection, dental caries, dry mouth, smoking, tobacco chewing, alcohol and many others You can follow these simple steps - brush twice daily - clean your tongue daily using a tongue scraper - floss once daily - if food gets trapped between teeth avoid using toothpick and instead use a interdental brush - rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after every meal - you can use Listerine mouthwash - avoid tobacco or smoking or alcohol - drink plenty of water
Next Steps
If bad breath persists despite all of this, visit a dentist for clinical examination and appropriate treatment
Health Tips
Additional tip - replace your toothbrush every 3 months - get professional scaling and dental checkup every 6 months - don’t avoid tongue cleaning as most of the bad odour causing bacteria are present there
