Why are my nipples hard and sore when i am not pregnant

I have just delivered a baby girl 4 months ago. During my last months of pregnancy i had nipples very hard and sore. I am 24 years of age. Now also I get this sore nipples and even hardness for 5 to 6 days in a month. Why do I get hard and sore nipples even when i am not pregnant?
