Cleaning a newborn’s tongue is a gentle process, as their oral cavity is delicate and developing.
Milk residue (especially if formula-fed) can build up on the tongue.
To maintain oral hygiene and prevent fungal infections like oral thrush.
How to clean the tongue:
Wash your hands thoroughly.
Use a clean, soft cloth or gauze dipped in warm, clean water (boiled and cooled).
Wrap the cloth around your index finger.
Gently open the baby’s mouth and softly rub the tongue in circular motions to remove any milk residue.
Wipe the gums as well if needed.
Do not use toothpaste or any cleaning agents at this stage.
How often?
Once daily.
Precautions:
Avoid over-scrubbing; newborns’ tongues are sensitive.
If you notice white patches that don’t wipe away, this could be oral thrush; consult your pediatrician.
