Hi, I am Dr. Atul Kumar Nimawat MS ENT
It’s good to hear that your daughter’s thyroiditis symptoms have improved. Since she was prescribed Defcort (a corticosteroid) with a tapering schedule, stopping it abruptly or restarting after a gap needs caution. Corticosteroids act on the body’s natural steroid balance, and irregular use can sometimes cause problems.
As she has already taken the medicine for around a month and then stopped for a week, restarting the same taper schedule on her own is not advisable. The course should ideally be continuous, and after a gap, restarting steroids depends on her current
thyroid status, symptoms, and how much tapering was left.
Since her condition has improved, in many cases the treatment can be stopped safely—but this decision must be confirmed after reviewing her latest thyroid function tests and clinical findings.
Health Tips
Do not self-continue the steroid course after a one-week gap. Get her re-evaluated before deciding whether to resume or stop.
