The sensation seems to be caused due to some pressure variation between your middle ear and the outside atmosphere. This may be secondary to blockade of eustachian tube which connects the middle ear to the pharynx thus maintaining pressure balance between the two. This is the same reason we have the similar sensation while ascending or descending in a flight. The blowing maneuver that you are doing is valsalva maneuver and helps opening up the eustachian tube.
