Hello....  This is a fungal infection of the nail which causes it to be ragged on surface and brittle.  If it is invasive or any super added bacterial infection will cause the pain and other signs of inflammation.  Show it to a podiatrist as soon as possible and get the appropriate treatment.  A course of antibiotics followed by removal of the nail should heal it.
