Fexofenadine withdrawal effect

I've been taking fexofenadine for 3 yrs. from the onset of bronchitis which lasted for a month and half. Now, when I stop it as per doctor's advice, i am getting uncontrollable itching all over the body. So doctor says take it when you get itching. Is it safe to take fexofenadine like this? Pl suggest any alternate methods?
