Elastics on teeth

I had clicking sounds. My doctor told me that my tmj muscle has come out of its place. But he told me that I don't have any malocclusion. So he put elastics in my teeth without braces and he said this will restrict the wide opening of mouth and thus will give time to the tmj muscle for healing which can help me improve. I have never seen elastics without braces and hence I am confused. Is this correct?

Wide mouth opening can further damage the TMJ. Hence patients are advised to not open the mouth wide or make protrusive movements with the jaw
