Advice on contraception
We are a young couple. And we are going to get married in a couple of weeks. Till now we have engaged in sexual intercourse 3-4 times using a condom alone. We wanted to know 1)if using condoms after marriage is sufficient? If not, then what should we use? 2) my fiancée is very fearful of using I-pill and other regular oral contraceptives as she read somewhere that they may lower the fertility. She says she can use them only after having one child first. Is that true? 3) also wanted to know does having MTP at the first time of conceiving have any bearing on future pregnancies? This is another idea she has that if MTP is done the first time it leads to complications in future. Thanks and regards

Hello.well condom is best of you meet each other occasionally... otherwise for regular basis the chances of failure are high as compared to other modes...instead you can use oral contraceptives..that is best method...if she is uncomfortable you guys may use condom only with spermicides so that it increases the efficacy ...nope ocps will not lower fertility...keep I pill only for emergencies...its not for regular use...and about mtp it is the termination of pregnancy not the method of contraception....yes complications are there but not like severe...but it's toll taking for the mother...consult an obstetrician..thank you

Hi Appreciate you for asking this question. IN FACT ALL RECENTLY MARRIED COUPLE SHOULD READ THIS QUESTION AND ANSWER. 1. WHEN you are planning to postpone pregnancy , get a fertility evaluation for both. Husband can get a semen analysis and wife can undergo a gynaec check up with ultrasound scan. IF BOTH OF YOU ARE NORMAL THEN CAN PLAN FOR PREGNANCY LATER. SUPPOSING  HUSBAND'S SEMEN ANALYSIS IS INADEQUATE AND WIFE IS HAVING OVULATION PROBLEMS OR ANY OTHER ISSUES PREGNANCY SHOULD NOT BE POSTPONED. 2.If everything is normal then condoms are the best. If wife is having regular periods ,say of 28 days then the safe days are from day5  to day  9  and from  day 20 to day 28  . NEXT OPTION IS CONTINUOUS LOW DOSE OC PILL.which are very safe for  short time say 6 months to 1 year ,but should be started after consulting a gynaecologist. IT WILL NOT AFFECT FUTURE FERTILITY. 3.I PILL should be used only in case of emergency and preferably married couple should try to avoid unless continuation of  pregnancy  is risky. 4.Any mode of MTP either medical or surgical, has got its own side effects which can be detrimental to the future fertility. HOPE I HAVE ANSWERED ALL YOUR QUESTIONS.WISHING BOTH OF YOU A HAPPY AND BLESSED MARRIED LIFE. FEEL FREE TO ASK YOUR DOUBTS. REGARDS DR.RADHAKRISHNAN.NAIR COCHIN
