What are the Scars?

Skin is a protecting valuable & seamless organ of the human body. Any burn, injury or trauma such as surgery can cause a scar on the skin. The process to repair the wound results in scarring. If the deeper layer of the skin is damaged hence dermis is required to heal the wound. If the superficial layer of the skin is damaged, then the scar won't be produced. If the scar is small in size or the location of the scar is easy to conceal, then that isn’t bad. But, when the scar is deep & big and the location of the scar cannot be hidden under the clothes hence the treatment is needed. The scar never really goes away but can be made lighter and less visible through different treatment options. 

How does Scarring occur?

The repairing of the deep layer of dermis after the wound results in scarring. The appearance of the scar and the treatment options of the scar depends on multiple factors such as:

1. Depth, size, and location of the wound
2. Age
3. Genes
4. Sex
5. Ethnicity

What are the signs and symptoms of the Scars?

Scars occur at the site of tissue damage and appear as firm red to purple fibrous tissue that over time usually becomes flatter and lighter in color.

How to diagnose Scars?

1. Visual inspection
2. In rare cases, the scar tissue is to be examined under a microscope to confirm the true identity of the cause. 
3. A biopsy can also be required as sometimes other skin disorders can also form scar tissue.  

What are the different types of scars?

There are different types of scar tissues such as:

1. Keloid scars - These scars are the result of an overly aggressive healing process. They extend beyond the original injury. Over time, a keloid scar may hamper movement.
2. Contracture scar -  If the skin has been burned, then the individual may have a contracture scar.
3. Hypertrophic scar - These are raised, red scars that are similar to keloids but do not go beyond the boundary of the injury.
4. Acne scar -  If the individual had severe acne, then probably have the scars to prove it.

What treatment options are available for scars?

Following are the treatment options available for scars:

1. Over the counter creams, ointment, or gels
2. Surgical removal or surgical treatment
3. Injections
4. Collagen or other fillers

What is the prognosis of the Scar?

Scars generally improve in appearance over the first year. So considerations for invasive treatments need to be reconsidered before the first year. On the other hand, scarring usually involves tissue contraction, so that it is unlikely that scars that pull or twist other anatomical structures, producing unpleasant results, will improve. These should be treated sooner than later.
