He completed his MBBS at Annamalai University, India, and moved to the UK, where he was awarded an MD degree by University of London for his research at St.Thomas’s Hospital, London, funded by the British Heart Foundation. He has performed 14 of “First-in-India” heart treatments and 4 of “First-in-the-world” heart treatments. In the UK, he worked as a Consultant Cardiologist (Interventional Cardiology and Interventional Electrophysiology) at the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, the Heart Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital and the Great Ormond Street Hospital. He served as a Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the HeartTeam India and as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at MIOT International, both in Chennai, India. He was Director - TAVR and Endovascular Therapy and Director - Electrophysiology and Device Therapy.
Dr. Gopalamurugan is well known for performing complex high-risk treatments successfully through innovative technology and planning. He has done the maximum number of heart valve treatments in the form of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure in India. His expertise covers electrophysiology study and ablations (Heart Rhythm Disorders), multivessel Angioplasty and laser Angioplasty. He has several publications to his name and is a world leader in his field. He performed the first TAVR with Medtronic Evolut R System, the first TAVI for Aortic Stenosis, the first Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR), and the first Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Replacement (TTVR) in India. He also performed the first Transacatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) for Aortic Stenosis in South India and holds the Guinness World Record for the first dedicated TAVR Programme, in India.
